Atlantic City Electric Provides Financial Aid to Vulnerable Communities
Atlantic City Electric is stepping up to support those in need! The company is actively reaching out to communities of color in the region to ensure they are aware of and utilizing the available energy assistance programs. Among these initiatives is the Customer Relief Fund, which offers a helping hand of up to $300 to eligible customers struggling with the burden of increased energy supply costs.
In July, Atlantic City Electric initiated the Customer Relief Fund, specifically targeting limited- and moderate-income customers who qualify for federal and state energy assistance programs. This fund is a testament to the company's dedication to its customers, as emphasized by Jessica Grullon, the communications manager and community advocate.
But here's where it gets personal: Grullon highlights that Atlantic City Electric has been an integral part of South Jersey's community for over a century. Their employees are not just workers; they are the very fabric of these communities, being neighbors, friends, and family. And this is the part most people miss—the company recognizes the unique challenges faced by many households, especially Black and Latino residents, and is committed to providing immediate relief through the Customer Relief Fund.
This one-time program, generously funded by a $4 million donation from Exelon, Atlantic City Electric's parent company, to the nonprofit SHARES, offers a much-needed safety net. Customers facing higher energy bills due to rising costs can apply for grants, which will be credited directly to their Atlantic City Electric account. With over $2 million still available in the fund, thousands have already received assistance.
To access this support, customers can call 1-800-642-3780 or visit atlanticcityelectric.com/Relief. But wait, there's more! Atlantic City Electric also offers a range of additional programs to help those struggling with energy costs:
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): A federally funded initiative providing grants of up to $1,200, with no repayment required. Eligibility is based on household income, fuel type, and dwelling type.
- Universal Service Fund (USF): This fund ensures more affordable energy bills for eligible customers, with recently updated eligibility requirements.
- Fresh Start: Part of the USF program, offering arrearage forgiveness to past participants.
- Lifeline: A utility assistance program offering $225 to eligible individuals based on income guidelines, available to both utility customers and tenants with utility bills included in their rent.
For more details on these programs, residents can visit the Department of Community Affairs website or use their self-screening tool to determine their eligibility for energy assistance benefits. Additionally, the Assistance Finder tool at atlanticcityelectric.com/AssistanceFinder can help customers find the programs that best suit their needs.
