The Australian Open's Seventh Day: Predictions That Could Shake Up the Tournament!
Melbourne Park is buzzing as we hit the seventh day of the Australian Open, and the intensity is only ramping up with eight thrilling third-round men's singles matches on the schedule. As always, we're diving deep to bring you our expert predictions for every single encounter. The question on everyone's mind: who will emerge victorious and secure their spot in the coveted round of 16?
Jannik Sinner vs. Eliot Spizzirri
Ateet: The defending champion, Jannik Sinner, was in absolute cruise-control during his last match, effortlessly dispatching James Duckworth with a career-best 18 aces. While Eliot Spizzirri has certainly enjoyed a remarkable run so far, he's going to need something truly miraculous to overcome the world's premier hard-court player.
Prediction: Sinner in 3 sets
Yesh: It's been a fantastic journey for Eliot Spizzirri this week, but unfortunately, his party is set to end against the unstoppable Italian force. Sinner should prove to be far too formidable for the former college star.
Prediction: Sinner in 3 sets
Andreas: Is there anyone who can actually stop Sinner? The two-time defending Australian Open champion absolutely dominated his second-round match. Spizzirri, while a talented player, might find himself a bit inexperienced for the grand stage of the Australian Open's big courts. The American possesses a powerful game and brings infectious energy, but it's highly unlikely to be enough to challenge the world #2.
Prediction: Sinner in 3 sets
Ben Shelton vs. Valentin Vacherot
Ateet: Facing Ugo Humbert in the very first round served as a stern test for Ben Shelton, sharpening his focus precisely where he needs it to be. Valentin Vacherot presents another tough matchup for the American, but I'm really liking what I'm seeing from Shelton. He should be able to clinch this victory in four sets, if not three.
Prediction: Shelton in 4 sets
Yesh: Valentin Vacherot is certainly proving that his Shanghai Masters title wasn't a mere fluke, but he's a long way from replicating that level of play right now. It's a shame, because against Shelton, he'd absolutely need to be at his absolute best.
Prediction: Shelton in 4 sets
Andreas: Much like Sinner, no one has managed to get a handle on Shelton's incredibly powerful serve. Vacherot is a player who can be dangerous on the tour, and he certainly surprised many fans at the end of the 2025 season. However, stepping up to the plate in a best-of-five format will be an entirely new challenge for Vacherot. Expect Shelton's serve to be the deciding factor in carrying him into the second week.
Prediction: Shelton in 4 sets
Stan Wawrinka vs. Taylor Fritz
Ateet: Stan Wawrinka staged an impressive comeback, fighting back from a set down to defeat Arthur Gea in a thrilling five-setter. This remarkable win makes him the oldest player since Ken Rosewall to reach the third round of a Grand Slam! Wawrinka has been showcasing some exceptional tennis this season, but all these grueling, lengthy matches might not serve him well against a player of Taylor Fritz's caliber. Wawrinka might snatch a set fueled by pure adrenaline, but Fritz should ultimately prevail.
Prediction: Fritz in 4 sets
Yesh: Could this be the final chapter for Stan Wawrinka at the Australian Open? I certainly think so. Assuming he's healthy, Fritz is simply too good for this current iteration of Wawrinka to contend with over five sets.
Prediction: Fritz in 4 sets
Andreas: All eyes will undoubtedly be on Wawrinka for this particular match. The Swiss veteran has secured some significant victories in 2026, but defeating Fritz would undoubtedly be his most impressive win in a considerable amount of time. However, Fritz has spent far less time on court compared to the veteran in this tournament. I find it hard to believe Wawrinka can sustain another best-of-five thriller, unless he can start aggressively and maintain a fast pace. Otherwise, Fritz might just wear down the 2014 champion.
Prediction: Fritz in 4 sets
Lorenzo Musetti vs. Tomas Machac
Ateet: Lorenzo Musetti was in no mood to give his friend and compatriot, Lorenzo Sonego, any easy points and was utterly ruthless in his victory. Tomas Machac will face a player with a one-handed backhand across the net for the third match in a row, but this will undoubtedly be his toughest test by far. This match has all the makings of one of the best third-round encounters, and I'm backing the Italian to come out on top.
Prediction: Musetti in 5 sets
Yesh: Musetti doesn't quite project as a player ready to conquer Grand Slams just yet. However, he is still better than Machac, even though the Czech seems to be overcoming his recent slump.
Prediction: Musetti in 3 sets
Andreas: Machac battled his way to a significant win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round and crushed Musetti in their only previous encounter in 2024. While Musetti looked considerably improved in his second-round win against Lorenzo Sonego, I'm leaning towards an upset. Machac, riding a seven-match winning streak, boasts a powerful forehand and performs at his peak when he's healthy. Musetti showed some shaky moments in his first-round win and could potentially overhit against a more seasoned opponent.
Prediction: Machac in 4 sets
