Growing up in Logan with a Guatemalan father and an Ecuadorian mother, she understands the importance of representation. Maria O'Mara, the executive director, believes Avanza will appeal to a specific demographic. She envisions millennials who are primarily English speakers but also fluent in Spanish as their target audience. Avanza's journey began in 2024, when KUER and PBS Utah acquired the license for a former Salt Lake City public radio station. They've partnered with Radio Bilingüe and Bilingual Sounds to create a rich and diverse programming lineup. From Radio Bilingüe, they've sourced some content, but they also produce their own, like "Hecho en Utah," a show profiling Latino entrepreneurs.
The station recently welcomed Spanish-language journalist Pablo Tellechea to host "Punto de Encuentro." This news and analysis program will cover a wide range of topics, from mental health and education to the experiences of Latino immigrants. Tellechea emphasizes the show's inclusive nature, inviting everyone to join the conversation and work towards a better society.
Zuñiga's vision is to make Avanza a community hub, inviting local talent to contribute. He aims to reflect the diversity of Utah through volunteer DJs and locally produced content.
Music is at the heart of Avanza, and the station boasts an extensive Latin music library. Linares highlights their diverse offerings, moving beyond Mexican regional music to include Caribbean rhythms, salsa, boleros, bachata, and cumbias.
