Aliko Dangote, the influential founder of the Dangote Group, has made a bold move to tackle Nigeria's soaring petrol prices. In a statement that will undoubtedly spark debate, Dangote announced that petrol will be sold at a significantly reduced rate of ₦739 per litre, starting Tuesday, with MRS stations in Lagos leading the way.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dangote revealed that the Lekki Refinery had already lowered its gantry price from ₦828 to ₦699 per litre, yet some filling stations were allegedly keeping pump prices high, intentionally sabotaging the intended price reduction. Dangote's determination to enforce the new price is evident: "We will make sure that it's implemented... We are selling at ₦699... Those who want to keep the price high to undermine the government, we will fight to bring these prices down."
And this is the part most people miss: Dangote's move comes amidst accusations of corruption against the NMDPRA CEO, Farouk, and concerns about the issuance of import licenses for a substantial 7.5 billion litres of petrol for Q1 2026, which could potentially harm local refineries. Dangote argues that such actions discourage local investment and put modular refineries at risk.
With transport costs for petrol from the refinery estimated at a mere ₦10-15 per litre, Dangote questions the justification for pump prices reaching ₦900. He urges buyers to purchase fuel at the lower gantry price and aims to ensure nationwide petrol prices don't exceed ₦740 during December and January.
