Dragons Head Coach Filo Tiatia Defends Strategic Changes After Benetton Loss
In a bold move, Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia has defended his decision to make significant changes following a devastating defeat by Benetton, which left the team with no room for error in their quest for the Challenge Cup's last 16. The Italian team's 11 tries in a 74-21 victory in Treviso marked the third-heaviest loss in Dragons' history.
Tiatia's strategic shift included resting key players like Aaron Wainwright and Harri Keddie due to a six-day turnaround, making nine changes in total. This decision came after three consecutive wins in Newport, but it resulted in a missed opportunity for a home tie in the Challenge Cup knockout stages.
Despite the setback, Tiatia remains confident. He stated, "No, I don't regret it. We made nine changes, and players who worked hard deserve a chance to wear the jersey. We aim to reward them and identify areas for improvement."
The Dragons must now beat Newcastle Red Bulls at Rodney Parade on January 16 (20:00 GMT) to secure their place in the next round. Tiatia expresses optimism, hoping to welcome back Wainwright, Keddie, Ben Carter, Angus O'Brien, Che Hope, and Fine Inisi.
However, Newcastle, having won all pool games, aims for home advantage in the next round. Tiatia acknowledges the challenge, saying, "It'll be a tough game. We understand their strength. Newcastle is a formidable team."
A win would temporarily elevate the Dragons above Perpignan and Lions, who play in France on Saturday. A draw at Stade Aime Giral would still leave the Dragons vulnerable to elimination based on points difference if they beat Newcastle.
Dragons captain O'Brien expresses confidence, stating, "We're confident we can build on our recent home performances and reach the knockout stage of Europe for the first time since 2022-23. The crowd's support has been incredible, and it's a massive opportunity for the club."
The team's determination to qualify and compete in the latter stages of European competition against top clubs is a testament to their resilience and ambition.
