In a significant development, Google is set to discontinue its dark web monitoring tool in February 2026, just under two years after it was launched. This tool was created to help users keep an eye on whether their personal information might be exposed on the dark web, but now it's facing the axe.
Starting January 15, 2026, Google will halt scans for any new breaches related to the dark web, with the complete shutdown of the feature scheduled for February 16, 2026.
Why is this happening? Google explained in a support document, "While the report offered general information, feedback showed that it didn't provide helpful next steps." They emphasized the need to pivot towards tools that deliver clearer and more actionable guidance for users looking to safeguard their online data.
As part of this transition, Google has committed to deleting all data pertaining to the dark web report once it is retired in February. However, if users wish to remove their monitoring profiles sooner, they can easily do so by following these straightforward steps:
- Navigate to the Dark Web report page.
- Under the section labeled "Results with your info," select Edit monitoring profile.
- At the bottom of the screen, click "Delete monitoring profile" and confirm by selecting Delete.
The dark web report was introduced back in March 2023 as a proactive measure against online identity theft, which often arises from stolen information that circulates within the dark web. This tool was designed to scan the depths of the internet for sensitive personal data—such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers—and alert users if their information was detected.
In an effort to broaden access, Google expanded this service in July 2024, making it available to all account holders, not just those subscribed to Google One.
Furthermore, Google is encouraging users to bolster their online security measures by setting up a passkey for phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) and removing personal information from Google Search results through the "Results About You" feature.
