I-70 Closure: High Winds and Blowing Dust Cause Travel Hazards (2026)

High winds and blowing dust have caused significant disruptions on Interstate 70, leading to road closures and reduced visibility. As of 5 p.m., the eastbound lanes between Colby and Oakley remain shut down, while the westbound lanes have been opened from WaKeeney to the Colorado state line. Additionally, eastbound lanes are now open at Oakley.

The closure is due to not only the high winds and dust, but also vehicle crashes that have blocked the roadway. High Wind and Red Flag Warnings are in effect through the afternoon across much of northwest Kansas, and motorists are advised to consider delaying non-essential travel if possible.

For the latest updates on road closures and conditions, visit kandrive.gov or call 511 in Kansas or 866-511-5368 outside Kansas. But here's where it gets controversial... While the current closures are necessary for safety, some argue that more could be done to improve road conditions and reduce the impact of these closures. What do you think?
