Max Verstappen says the outcome of the world championship is not fully in his hands as he aims to clinch a fifth consecutive title. The Red Bull driver must reach the podium this weekend to stay in contention, but even that may not secure the title if McLaren’s Lando Norris also finishes in the top three.
Earlier in the season, Verstappen trailed Norris by 88 points and Oscar Piastri by 104 points, making his late surge all the more remarkable. He emphasized that simply having a shot at the title at the final round is a major achievement and has brought him a renewed sense of motivation.
“I’ve really enjoyed the second half of the season, working with the team, and how we’ve turned things around—from tense debriefs after disappointing races to moments of real positivity and smiles,” he said. “Winning again feels fantastic, and every moment here is a bonus while we’re fighting for the championship.”
He added that the situation is straightforward in a personal sense: the focus is to have a good weekend, while acknowledging that the result is ultimately out of his control.
With four previous titles to his name, Verstappen also noted that there is little he has to lose should he fail to secure a fifth. “The trophy still looks the same, and I already have four at home, so winning a fifth would be special, but I’m not chasing validation—everything I’ve achieved in Formula 1 matters to me,” he explained. “I pursue victory because I love the sport and enjoy the challenge.”
As for the weekend’s prospects, Verstappen said a victory is the strongest path to the title, though he remains skeptical about Red Bull’s outright pace. “Realistically, I don’t think we’re the fastest car, but surprises happen—the same way they did in Qatar. We’ll see how it unfolds.”
