BREAKING NEWS: Sony Pictures has officially decided to scrap the Spider-Woman movie that was set to be directed by Olivia Wilde, but there's an intriguing twist—Sony is now showing a willingness to collaborate more closely with Marvel Studios and share additional characters from its Spider-Man universe.
The initial announcement regarding the Spider-Woman project surfaced back in 2020, sparking excitement among fans about Wilde's involvement as both a filmmaker and actress. However, updates on the film have been scarce, and Sony soon shifted its focus towards another female-led project, Madame Web. While this new direction did not include Jessica Drew, it did highlight other characters like Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon, and Mattie Franklin, who have all donned the Spider-Girl or Spider-Woman title in the comics over the years.
Recent reports indicate that following the disappointing performance of Kraven the Hunter, Sony has placed a halt on various Spider-Man spin-offs, including the much-anticipated Spider-Woman. Daniel Richtman confirmed this news, suggesting that Wilde's vision for the character may never come to fruition.
Interestingly, this decision might not evoke strong disappointment among fans, particularly since Jessica Drew's comic book legacy is deeply intertwined with S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. There have long been whispers that Marvel Studios could utilize Jessica in their cinematic universe, similar to how they approached Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, although possibly without using the Spider-Woman title. This opens the door for some optimistic developments ahead.
Richtman also reported that Sony is becoming increasingly receptive to sharing its characters with Marvel Studios, a significant shift from previous positions. For instance, the studio had previously barred Marvel from using Kraven the Hunter in Black Panther. After experiencing considerable success with the Venom franchise, many of Sony's characters were kept away from Marvel until the somewhat awkward crossover moments we saw in both Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
With Marvel Studios gearing up for ambitious plans involving the Symbiote in their upcoming trilogy starting with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans can look forward to seeing Venom join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), alongside other beloved characters like Black Cat and Silver Sable—who had previously been slated for their own standalone films that never materialized.
Reflecting on the now-scrapped Spider-Woman project, Wilde shared her thoughts in 2020, expressing her excitement about the increasing presence of female storytellers in the superhero genre:
"Look, we are seeing this incredible influx of female directors and storytellers getting to take hold of this genre, of the superhero space, and infuse it with their own perspective. So, not only do I get to tell this story as a director, but I get to develop this story, and that was what made it so incredible for me."
She continued, "I'm just honored to be amongst this wave of women who are showing up and saying, 'We are not only going to step in and try and tell this story like men do, we're actually going to reframe the stories themselves.' And the industry is, as far as I can tell, really supportive of that. There is a sea change and it's because of these decades of trailblazers who demanded this over and over and over again and it's finally broken through and I'm very fortunate to be there with it."
