A Warning for Drivers: Hartside Pass Car Meet and Winter Driving Hazards

Drivers are being urged to stay alert and cautious as winter approaches, following a recent large-scale car meet at Hartside Pass in Alston, Cumbria. The event, which took place on Sunday at approximately 1:20 PM GMT, raised concerns about unsafe driving practices, including handbrake turns on sharp corners.
Hartside Pass, renowned for its breathtaking views and challenging tight bends, is a popular route for drivers traveling between Northumberland and Cumbria. However, its elevation of 1,904 feet (580 meters) and the potential for microclimates due to frost, ice, snow, and fallen leaves make it a treacherous path during the winter months. Short daylight hours and glare from headlights of oncoming vehicles further contribute to the dangers.
Northumberland County Council's Public Safety Cabinet Member, Councillor Gordon Stewart, emphasized the need for drivers to exercise caution, stating, 'Driving in winter presents unique challenges. Microclimates can form rapidly due to various weather conditions, and leaf fall can create hidden hazards. Additionally, limited daylight and glare from headlights can be disorienting. Cross-border operations are in place to ensure the safety of all road users.'
While no inappropriate or dangerous driving was observed by police officers, some drivers were found to have tinted windows and incorrect number plates. In the UK, car window tinting regulations mandate that the front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light to pass through, and front side windows should permit a minimum of 70%. Rear windows are not subject to any specific rules.
Furthermore, car front number plates must adhere to strict guidelines, including being reflective, displaying black characters on a white background, using the official font, and meeting specific size and spacing requirements. Custom backgrounds or removable characters are not permitted. The plates must be clearly visible and fixed vertically.
