A Warning for Residents: Untreated Wastewater Spill in the Lower Russian River

In a concerning development, residents are being strongly advised to steer clear of the lower Russian River following an incident involving an unspecified amount of untreated wastewater that has leaked from a sewage treatment facility located in Guerneville. This unfortunate event occurred during the latter part of a storm that inundated Sonoma County, leading to significant flooding on numerous local roads.

The heavy rains, which are a consequence of the region's extended atmospheric river, caused the storage ponds at the treatment plant to overflow early Tuesday morning. Stuart Tiffen, a spokesperson for Sonoma Water, which manages the Russian River Treatment Plant, shared this information with the public.

Officials informed affected community members about the spill on Tuesday morning, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. Tiffen characterized the spill as an ongoing issue and mentioned that it remains unclear exactly how many residents are affected or the precise volume of wastewater—including raw sewage—that is entering the river.

"It's challenging to accurately assess the situation at this moment," Tiffen explained to The Press Democrat, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the spill's impact.

In response to the spill, multiple agencies are collaborating with Sonoma Water to manage the situation. This includes the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office as well as the county’s environmental and public health departments. However, officials have yet to provide a specific timeline for when the cleanup will be completed, and they have issued warnings urging the public to avoid any contact with the water while also requesting residents to minimize their wastewater output.

During the recent heavy rainfall, the treatment facility was overwhelmed with flows reaching four million gallons per day, despite being designed for a maximum of 710,000 gallons daily under dry conditions. This situation created a critical shortage of storage capacity at the plant.

As for the Russian River itself, it has been swollen and muddy due to the recent precipitation, with flow rates exceeding 30,000 cubic feet per second, equivalent to approximately 13.4 million gallons per minute, as recorded at the Hacienda Bridge in Forestville. Officials noted that some of the discharged wastewater traveled about a quarter of a mile through a wooded area before reaching the main stem of the river.

Sonoma Water has taken steps to notify relevant regulatory bodies and environmental experts who will evaluate the current conditions and the potential ecological repercussions of this spill.

It's important to note that this is not the first occurrence of a wastewater spill reported by Sonoma Water. In March 2024, over 200,000 gallons of partially treated water found its way into the river after a power outage disrupted operations at the treatment plant. Furthermore, three years prior, a sewer main break resulted in raw sewage spilling from a pipe in the Vacation Beach section of Guerneville. The treatment system also faced pipeline issues back in 2014.
